It very difficult for me to rate this book…I liked the story and I liked the characters, but the writing style was bad…
Much was told and not shown. It was written in a kind of mechanical way. Passages that should have moved me in some way, just left me feeling like I was reading a cake recipe. Even the sex scenes, that were very frequent by the way, were written in this way: rub point A until lubricated, suck point B, put tab A into slot B… Boring…
And this was not only during sex scenes, but everywhere: action scenes, discussions, relationship…
Another complaint I have is the pacing: too fast. It also didn’t flow smoothly, but change direction often and abruptly.
If you can get up to this writing style the story is very interesting. A young, incredibly beautiful red-hair woman, super agent for a very important non government agency, meets a gorgeous rich ex-SEAL self-made business man whose brother need a bodyguard. And she’s perfect for that!
But Maia is incredible: she knows how to fight, she’s strong willed, she’s sexy, she’s mouthy, she’s sassy, she’s extremely independent. She doesn’t do relationships. She lives for her work and she’s very, very good at it.
Jack is an ex-SEAL who, when he quit the SEALs, make a name for himself into a business of supplying the government with innovative weapons and other items. He doesn’t do relationships too, because he lost his fiancée due to his SEAL past and doesn’t want to involve his heart again.
The perfect pair! So they start their affair, but both start falling in love.
Besides their love story, the Russian Mob war is on for the distribution and production of a powerful new drug. Maia is obviously involved and Jack’s brother too and therefore Jack. Maia gets into difficult situations where she risks her life and Jack protective side goes into over-drive. He doesn’t want Maia to get into danger, but she loves her job and danger is her thing! So they clash continuously… and also continuously they have make-up sex.
Both are strong characters and the choices they made are logical and easily understandable.
As I said, the book had much potential, but the writing style was a BIG issue for me, thus the only 3 stars rating… Sooo sorry… :(
